Background: BMPs (bone morphogenetic proteins) belong to the Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGF beta) superfamily of structurally related signaling proteins. BMP3 negatively regulates bone density. Antagonizes the ability of certain osteogenic BMPs to induce osteoprogenitor differentitation and ossification. In vivo studies have shown that BMP3 can independently induce cartilage formation.
