Background: Citrulline is the deaminated form of arginine. Recently, the detection of citrillunated proteins, specifically keratin, has been of interest in the preliminary diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The epitope of keratin that is recognized by auto-antibodies is cyclic citrulline. Antibodies developed to recognize cyclic citrulline peptide (CCP) have provided earlier RA detection as compared to the historically used rheumatoid factor analysis.
