Background: CDK11 (Cyclin-dependent kinase 11) also known as cell division cycle 2-like 2 (CDC2L2) is one of the components of the Mediator coactivator complex. The Mediator complex is a multiprotein complex required for transcriptional activation by DNA binding transcription factors of genes transcribed by RNA polymerase II. This protein is similar to cyclin-dependent kinase 8 which can also be a component of the Mediator complex. The CDK11(p110/p58) kinases are essential for cellular viability as well as normal early embryonic development.
