Background: Brn3a (Brain-specific homeobox/POU domain protein 3A) is a transcription factor specifically expressed in cells of the developing mammalian nervous system. Brn3a is implicated in the regulation of specific gene expression within a subset of neuronal lineages and may play a role in determining or maintaining the identities of a small subset of visual system neurons. Brn3a is expressed in enbryonic brain, peripheral sensory nervous system and retina. In the adult nervous system Brn3a is primarily found in the CNS: medial habenula, superficial gray of the superior colliculus, red nucleus, mesencephalic nucleus of the trigeminal ganglion, nucleus ambiguus, inferior olivary nucleus and peripheral sensory ganglia.
