Background: KMT1C/G9a is a histone methytransferase that preferentially methylates K9 and K27 of histone H3 in vitro. H3 K9 methylation serves as a mark for epigenetic transcriptional repression by recruiting HP1 to the site of this post-translational modification. The binding of HP1 also may serve to recruit Dnmt3a/b, resulting in DNA methylation. G9a-mediated histone methylation plays a significant role in epigenetic silencing.
